I felt that Coober Pedy to Alice was quite a drive, but a week later, my first morning back on Warlpiri country, I met two of my Yapa friends early in the morning, just coming into town having made this journey, along dirt roads full of washouts and corrugations. In a car. A saloon car. It took them 16 hours.
I went out with some traditional owners yesterday looking for a salt lake, but we couldn't find the road in. This is the main road to Papunya, where we found another way in, but it was too late in the day so we had to turn back. The Papunya road, a different part of it, is where I took the photo that is on the cover of Provenance.
We found bush bananas
Under a fabulous, ever-changing sky
I'm not going to be sending regular blogs from here. My days here are not for putting on display, for a number of reasons, personal and cultural. But I'll try and put up the occasional post.
